Description

In the upcoming lecture, “A Carbon Free and Climate Ready Boston,” Austin Blackmon, Boston’s Chief of Environment, Energy, and Open Space, will talk about the actions that the city must take in order to thrive in the coming decades as we continue to face challenges from climate change. Since 1991, Boston has experienced 21 events that triggered federal or state disaster declarations. For example, in 2011, Hurricane Irene caused downed trees and power outages across the city. In 2012, Boston experienced high winds and coastal flooding during Superstorm Sandy, and the city might have suffered even more if the high tide had corresponded with the storm’s arrival. As the climate changes, the likelihood of coastal and river flooding—as well as other hazards, such as storm water flooding and extreme heat—will increase. The challenges from climate change are substantial and complex but can be addressed through bold and creative actions that support the city’s vitality and livability. Blackmon will discuss the importance of taking action to create a resilient, climate-ready Boston, dramatically improving the city and quality of life for all its residents.
